Considered by some a fashion phenomenon, orange wine reappeared in the last years in cellarists and wine bars. However, its story goes back to Antiquity! Would you like to know more? Let yourself be guided and (re)discover the production secrets of this so particular wine.
Its story began more than 6000 BC in the Caucase in Georgia, one of the cradles of winegrowing. The vines were traditionally grown and vinified in amphoras called Qvevri. They are oval containers in terracotta, without handles, that are buried to stay at the same temperature.

Researchers found traces of tartaric, malic, succinic, and citric acid in these potteries. These acids are the chemical signature of grapes and wine, meaning orange wine could be the first white wine vinified by men!
Orange wine is a white wine vinified like red wine and therefore comes from a maceration of the grapes with the juice. It is this maceration between the juice of white grapes and the skin, stems, and seeds that will give its orange colour to the wine. As for red wines, it is this solid part that will give the tannic structure to the wine, allowing us to talk here about tannic white wines. The maceration of the orange wine can go from a few days to several months, depending on the profile of wine the winemaker is looking for. The longer it is, the more coloured, structured and complex the wine will be.
Great debate! Orange wines are tannic, aromatic, vivid, and expressive, so quite particular, though can still accompany many dishes.
- With meat
The tannic and aromatic side of these wines gives them the possibility to pair with many types of meat. However, be careful to not let the power of the meat take the advantage. Think of tender and generous meats like duck or guinea fowl, that will be perfect with a gourmet sauce. - With spicy dishes
Asian, Arabic, or Indian cuisines are perfect pairings, and curries are recommended. Their power and unctuosity give a soft pairing with orange wine. Tajine with dried fruits and sweet-savory meals will be lovely too.
