These warm days of spring signal the comeback of picnics and drinks on the terrace. For spontaneous or well-anticipated meetings, the choice of food and wines can be delicate, but no worries! Here go a few suggestions of pairings that will accompany you for the good days to come.
If you go for a picnic with shells and seafood, white wine will be the ideal choice. A dry, vivid, and mineral wine will put at its advantage the iodine aromas of sea products, think about the Sancerre Domaine Vacheron 2021 for example. If you prefer bubbles, choose a low-dose Blanc de Blancs, the freshness and chiseled profile of the wine will wonderfully echo with an oyster platter. If it is not already done, let yourself be tempted by the Champagne Tour d’Argent that will be perfect in this role.
You have also multiple options for a more traditional picnic. A light, fruity, and slightly acidic red wine will offer a mouth-watering and well-balanced pairing with the fat content of the deli. The freshness of white wine from a fresh terroir will behave in the same way with a cheese platter.
- For red wine, go for the Côte-Roannaise appellation, with the cuvée Éclat de Granite 2021 of the Sérol estate
- For white wine, we suggest you the cuvée L’Excellence of Clos Saint-Fiacre. It comes from a selection of the best Chardonnay of the vineyard, aged in barrels, that will have enough character to be served with old cheeses, like a Tomme or 30-month Comté.
If you go for a vegetarian picnic, there are a lot of wine-pairing options. To accompany salads and balanced the acidity of the dressing, choose a dry and fresh white wine, like the Muscadet-Sèvre-et-Maine 2021 of Domaine de la Combe. With recipes of grilled vegetables, go for a supple and fruity red wine that will sublimate the crispy touch of the vegetables without covering their flavors with too-present tannins. We especially think about the Hautes-Côtes de Nuits of the estate David Duband on the 2018 vintage.
A little bit of sweetness for the afternoon break! A dessert wine like a Muscat de Beaumes-de-Venise will be the ideal ally for fruit-based preparations, in particular with peach or apricot. Fortified wines like Port or Banyuls will be perfect with chocolate-based desserts; and for more lightness, how about a natural sparkling Rosé with a few grams of residual sugar? All choices are good if they please your palate!
