The good storing of wine is essential to preserve its quality and delicate aromas. One of the most frequent threats wine lovers are confronted with is heat. High temperatures can alter the chemical composition of wine and provoke its premature aging. Let’s see what simple still efficient measures you can take to protect your wine during summer!
The first step to protecting wine from the heat consists in finding an appropriate storage place. Avoid places where the temperature may considerably fluctuate, such as kitchens or unisolated garages. Ideally, find a cool place, dark and stable like a cellar or a pantry. These spaces generally offer optimal conditions of temperature and dampness to preserve wines.
Another essential way to protect wines is to control the storage temperature. Red, white, and sparkling wines have different ideal temperatures of storage.
Red wines can be stored at 12°C-18°C, whites at 8°C-12°C, and sparkling ones at 5°C-8°C.
The idea is overall to find stability in the temperatures, to avoid a dramatic thermal choc for our precious bottles.
To go further, it is recommended to invest in an additional solution of isolation and protection to preserve your wine from the heat. Think about an aging cellar that will offer both darkness and stable temperature. There are of course less expensive alternatives! It is possible de protect the bottles from light and heat by packaging them in bubble wrap or in isothermal bags before storing them in your cellar. This solution helps to reduce temperature fluctuations and to protect the bottles from the light that deteriorates the wine.
